Importing electronics and information technology (IT) products without the registration of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is now prohibited in India.

The country strengthens the quality control of electronic products to curb the rise in purchases of cheap electronic goods, especially from China and strengthens local production under its Make in India program.

What is BIS?

BIS is a national organization that uses a product certification system to maintain the quality, safety, and reliability of products in India. The BIS certificate is not the same standard or instruction for all products. Instead, the products are controlled by a specific IS (Indian Standard).

Below, we describe the steps and procedures for registering products with BIS in India.

Get the product tested at any reputable BIS laboratory. All key components must be announced by the production unit and a test report for each component should be submitted to the lab, if applicable. The test report usually takes about 15 days to arrive.

The test report should only be issued in the name of the applicant producing the product and must specify the name of the production unit and the full address of the production unit.

Before applying for registration to the BIS, the applicant must ensure that the test report is properly evaluated and complete.

To apply, submit all supporting BIS registration documents and inspection reports. The test report must not be older than 90 days on the date of online application and physical use of registration. Copies of the documents must be submitted within 15 days to the BIS.

If foreign manufacturers do not have a liaison office or branch office in India, the forms must be completed and signed by the Indian Authorized Representative (AIR), appointed by the guidelines issued by the BIS.

Manufacturers/applicants should note here that they need to apply for a different registration number for products manufactured in different locations. If a product is produced under multiple varieties, each type must be registered separately. If the product and production area are the same, registration may be done based on the standard test report.

Once the application is completed, the documents will be verified by BIS officials and registration will be approved within 15 days. Registration is granted for two years and can be renewed every two years if there is no change in product and standard.

In addition to meeting the compliance of the BIS certificate, the importer must submit a Bill of Entry (BE) with the following documents:

Once the registration is approved, the BIS will issue a unique registration number to the applicant that can be attached to its products.
