Electric cars and SUVs do not make much money in the sale of passenger cars in India, but they have entered. Meanwhile, the lack of charged public infrastructure and high prices (despite government grants) has hampered the adoption of EVs. However, consumers now have more than a few options.
Mahindra in Verito was the first EV to arrive at the scene in June 2016, and now, five years later, eight electric vehicles are on sale, from sed markets and SUVs to luxury SUVs. Here’s a quick look at all the electric cars and SUVs you can buy in the country, today.

Tata Tigor EV
The recently revised Tigor EV has recently entered the EV category of the major market. Compared to its predecessor, the 2021 Tigor EV shares its look with ICE-powered Tigor facelift and acquires a powerful new train with Tata’s Ziptron EV technology. It has an estimated driving distance of ARAI of 306km and is one of the largest modern EV markets currently sold in India. Tigor EV shares its many machinery and style with the powerful Tigor ICE, though it stands out more because of its magnificent blue images. Between Rs 11.99-13.14 lakh.
Mahindra of Verito
Mahindra in Verito – an all-electric version of the now-defunct Verito sedan – has been on sale for more than five years. Available in two variants – D2 and D6 – eVerito has an 18.55kWh battery with an ARAI range of approximately 140km; the real-world scope, which is often less than the ARAI number, was a complaint. The weak electric motor also states that the eVerito is slow and hard to keep up with city traffic. Mahindra’s all-electric sedan is only suitable for short trips and is expensive for what it is, although it works, when aging, the cabinet is an extra point. Tata Nexon EV
The Tata Nexon EV was the first truly affordable EV in India. It has modern technology, like a communication suite, several good things, like a sunroof, and has a nice zipper too. Expect a battery of 30.2kWh battery to last 180-220km in the real world, depending on driving style and conditions. Our review of the Tata compact electric SUV has shown that it is off-line, durable, and fun to drive. The Tata Nexon EV has proved to be very popular with consumers so far. Currently, the SUV is the best-selling passenger car in India and has been updated with the latest Dark Edition version. Nexon EV currently has a value of between Rs 13.99-16.85 lakh.
Hyundai Kona Electric
Hyundai Kona Electric was launched in July 2019 as CKD to showcase Korean product technology in the EV arena. Hyundai also became the first regular car manufacturer to bring the EV to India. We found in our Kona Electric road test that the peppy performer, a well-dressed Hyundai, also has a reasonable distance of 250-300km per charge. However, its interior is dim and not so wide. The Kona Electric facelift of international markets was unveiled in November last year although there is no word on when it will be brought to India. Available in one cut with dual-color options, Kona electricity ranges prices between Rs 23.79-23.97 lakh.
MG ZS EV
ZS EV is a direct competitor to Hyundai Kona Electric. It boasts a wide range of real-world range from its 44.5kWh battery pack (as shown by our comparison between the ZS EV and Kona Electric), large cabinet space, and a long range of equipment. Earlier this year, MG introduced the update to the ZS EV which increased its ARAI range from 340km to 419km and ground clearance by 16mm. Prices for MG ZS EV are also slightly lower than Hyundai EV, as ZS EV entry-level costs from Rs 20.99 lakh, up to Rs 24.58 lakh per standard model. Autocar India reserves the right to set a record high distance traveled by EV for a single charge in India; 563km distance on ZS EV.
Mercedes-Benz EQC
Moving forward at the end of the market, Mercedes-Benz India’s first electric model, EQC, aims to attract traditional SUV buyers. The Mercedes-Benz EQC is refined, has exciting driving features, and can travel up to 350km in a single charger; consumers who choose to drive should not have any complaints. It is very luxurious though not as rich as you would expect from an expensive car like the big GLS with Rs 1.06 core. Lowering localization is also a problem, which we have found in our review of EQC India.
Jaguar Pace
Jaguar’s response to the Mercedes EQC is familiar in many ways – it’s amazing to look at, it feels special inside and it’s a driving hoot. The I-Pace distinguishes itself by the way it drives. It’s fun in a way you wouldn’t expect the EV to be. I-Pace is easy to live with and, considering that in our road test, the EV produced an average distance of 350-360km with a full charge, which is impressive as the EVs travel. The Jaguar Pace has been sold at three levels of repair – S, SE, and HSE – and is priced at Rs 1.06-1.12 crore.
Audi tron SUV and Sportback
Last on this list, and new to the EV luxury area Audi Tron twins. With e-Tron, buyers have the option to choose between a standard SUV or a Sportback sexier body style. The actual city distance of about 350km makes it beyond the normal urban grinding capacity, and the operation is as smooth and firm as it used to be. According to the typical Audi fashion, the e-Tron is fitted and the balance and finish levels are high. Prices range from Rs 99.99 lakh, starting with the e-Tron 50 Quattro SUV, while the SUV and Sportback are also available in the top 55 Quattro. Price rises by Rs 1.18 crore.
Tesla Model 3
The long-awaited Tesla Model 3 electric car will officially go on sale in the country at the end of the first quarter of the 2021-22 financial year. Booking for the new model will begin in January 2021. Initially, Tesla vehicles will be introduced as a CBU (Completely Built) unit; however, local production can begin over time.
Model 3 is available with one and two-car options. The standard Range and Standard Range Plus RWD entry-level provide a distance of 423km. These variants can reach 0-100km / h in just 6 seconds. The Long Range AWD (0-100kmph in 4.5 seconds) and the Long Range Performance AWD (0-100kmph in 3 seconds) come with a dual motor and provide a distance of 568km.
Mahindra EKUV100
Mahindra will launch the much-anticipated eKUV100 mini SUV before the end of this quarter. Launched at the 2020 Auto Expo, the new electric SUV will cost Rs 8.25 lakh (front room of the show). The electric mini SUV has a 40 kW electric engine that produces 53 bhp of power and 120Nm of torque. The mini SUV has a 15.9 kWh lithium-ion battery with a distance of 120km when fully charged. With a fast DC charger, the eKUV100 will take about 1 hour to charge up to 80%.
Mahindra EXUV300
The much-anticipated power XUV300 will be launched before the end of this year. It will be available in two variants – Standard and Long Range – offering 200km and 350-400km respectively. It will come with a 350V powertrain, power engines ranging from 60kW to 280kW, and batteries up to 80kW. Its exterior and interior will be slightly different from the standard ICE (Internal Combustion Engine).
Porsche Taycan
Porsche will officially launch the national electric Taycan in the first half of 2021. Based on the concept of Mission E, the Taycan is the company’s first electric car. It uses two permanent synchronous motors (PMS) that generate a combined power of more than 600bhp. This electric car is said to be 500km away when charged once. It can reach 0-100km / h in less than 3.5 seconds and 200km / h in less than 12 seconds. The battery can be charged up to 80% in just 22.5 minutes. An electric car can be charged over a distance of 100km using a powerful charging network for just over 5 minutes.
Audi In Tron
Audi has officially announced that it will launch the e-Tron electric SUV in the country in 2021. The new e-Tron has two engines – 125kW in the front and 140kW in the rear. The powertrain delivers 408 bhp torque and 664Nm, and power is transmitted to the wheels via the AWD system. The electric SUV runs up to 100km / h from zero in 5.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of 200km / h. The e-Tron also has a 95kWh battery that can be charged with re-breaking technology.
